The event brought together students, staff, alumni, community partners, and guests to celebrate Cameron’s legacy while highlighting the opportunities education can create for future generations of creators, innovators, and leaders. The tribute was especially meaningful as Campbell celebrates its 75th anniversary, a milestone that recognizes decades of learning, tradition, and Spartan pride.

Celebrating a Legacy That Inspires

Campbell High School Principal Paul Gillihan welcomed attendees and reflected on the school’s rich history, emphasizing that a school’s legacy is ultimately defined by the people it serves and the lives its graduates go on to influence. Cameron’s story is an important part of that history.

Gillihan also acknowledged the school’s evolving history, including the 1989 consolidation of Campbell and Wills High School, which brought together generations of students, traditions, and experiences.

“Ryan, wherever this campus may be in the future, you will always be a part of Campbell’s family,” Gillihan shared.

His message to students was clear: seeing someone who once walked the same halls achieve success can help them envision what is possible in their own lives.

A Permanent Reminder That Every Story Matters

Having grown up listening to Cameron on the radio, Wilson described the opportunity to honor him as a full-circle moment.

Campbell’s music technology students had the opportunity to interview Cameron and participate in content creation, audio engineering, and digital media production. Through Spartunes Digital, students are developing practical skills that can lead to careers in music, broadcasting, podcasting, and other creative industries.

During his visit, Cameron toured the program’s facilities and reflected on how technology has transformed opportunities for aspiring creatives. He noted that today’s students have access to tools that allow them to create music, build audiences, and share their work through digital platforms and social media.

“If you have the tools, you can create,” Cameron explained, encouraging students to recognize the possibilities available to them in the digital age.

From Campbell Student to Hall of Fame Career

He recalled struggling with a speech impediment early in life and described how his interest in broadcasting began when he heard himself on the radio as a young student. That experience helped spark a dream that would eventually lead to a celebrated career.

Cameron specifically recognized two of his former teachers for encouraging his creativity and helping him realize his potential. He also reflected on his experiences as a student, including serving as class president, participating in JROTC, playing basketball, and running track. Those opportunities, he explained, were an important part of his educational experience and personal development.

Cameron has received numerous career honors, including recognition from the Georgia Radio Hall of Fame and the Black Radio Hall of Fame, as well as a nomination to the National Radio Hall of Fame. Yet he described the Campbell tribute as one of the most meaningful recognitions of his career. For Cameron, the significance lies in what current students will see when they walk through the halls: someone from their own school community who pursued a dream and made a lasting impact.

As he reminded students, quoting his friend LL Cool J, “Dreams don't have deadlines.”

His message encouraged students to remain committed to their goals, even when success does not happen on their preferred timeline.

The celebration also included a special connection to Campbell’s athletic traditions. Athletic Director Phillip Howard presented Cameron with a throwback Panthers jersey featuring his name and the No. 3, honoring the school’s earlier identity and Cameron’s influence.

Howard also shared that the idea had inspired plans for a future Wills and Campbell throwback game, bringing the schools’ shared history into a new generation of Spartan traditions.edited-wm-02826.e44200139997.jpg

Cameron's journey demonstrates how education, supportive teachers, perseverance, and a passion for learning can open doors beyond the classroom. As Campbell continues to invest in programs such as Spartunes Digital, students are gaining access to the technology, skills, and professional connections that can help them shape their own futures. The permanent artwork honoring Cameron will ensure that his story remains part of the campus experience for years to come.

Once a Spartan, always a Spartan. With a legacy amplified, the next generation has a new reason to dream big!
