Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Brings Science to Life for Cobb 5th Graders

October 29, 2026 — In Cobb Schools, students experience learning beyond the classroom through unique opportunities that combine education with a bit of fun.
This week, 5th-grade students across the district took a field trip to the Cobb Energy Center, where they enjoyed a live performance by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
As more than 8,000 students took in the performance, they also had an educational experience in the process.
"This year, we've added a layer of science into the performance. And what we've done is we've partnered with the Atlanta Symphony to develop some science lessons that correlate with fifth-grade standards, specifically, our classification of organism standards," said Dr. Adam Casey, Cobb's Supervisor of STEM, STEAM, and Innovation.
The orchestra's "Symphony Safari" performance helped teach students about the science and sounds of animals while also putting on a memorable show.
"I really like when we get to, like, go out on field trips and everything because it's just like a fun experience where instead of our normal day of school, we get to go in, experience other things in the world," said Jasper, a 5th grader at Ford Elementary.

These experiences are made possible through Cobb's Performing Arts program, which ensures that students from pre-k through 8th grade have a memorable experience, including performances by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Opera, the Atlanta Ballet, and more.
"I hope that they take away that music is an exciting adventure that they can embark on in middle school, and continue what they've learned in elementary school, as well as some science standards in terms of vertebrates and invertebrates and their classifications," said Sara Womack, Cobb's Supervisor of Music, Dance, and Theatre.
