Coach Louie: Ready for Battles On and Off the Basketball Court

July 17, 2026 – Sprayberry has a new Girls Basketball Head Coach, and it is a familiar name and face for Yellow Jackets hoop fans. Rachel Louie, an assistant for the team for the last three years, has accepted the role of leading the program into its next chapter after the recent retirement of coach Kellie Avery.
“Basketball and working with young people have always been my greatest passions,” Coach Louie said. “They’re just my first loves. I’ve spent more than 15 years coaching and serving in the community, including the last 11 years at Sprayberry. I love this area, the people, and the family atmosphere. Now I have an even greater opportunity to make an impact. My goal is to teach, coach, and bring our community together by supporting all of our athletic programs. I want to bring excitement back to girls basketball, fill the stands, and prepare our student-athletes to compete at a high level. Most importantly, I want to guide these young women through the game they love, and I’m grateful to get to do it at Sprayberry.”
School administrators recognized Coach Louie’s love for Sprayberry during the interview process.
“Coach Louie has proven her commitment and dedication to the Sprayberry basketball program,” noted Dr. David Church, Sprayberry’s principal, of his newly hired Physical Education teacher. “Even still, the job wasn't given to her. A Head Coach position at Sprayberry attracts a lot of attention, and we interviewed several highly qualified candidates. Coach Louie outshone them all with a clear plan to move the program forward with a focus on player development and restoring Sprayberry's reputation for producing high-level talent and consistently putting a competitive team on the court.”
Athletic Director Dr. Nathan Autry appreciates his new head coach’s love for the school as well.
“Coach Louie bleeds yellow and black,” he said, “and understands the culture and traditions that make Sprayberry Basketball special.”
Coach Louie had been a para pro in the Special Education department at the school, but recently earned her master’s degree, which she will use in her new full-time position in the Physical Education Department at Sprayberry. Now, the Yellow Jackets’ new basketball leader is ready to put her mark on the program.
“I'm a defensive coach,” Coach Louie said. “If you can't play defense, you probably won't get that much playing time. I want players who take pride in stopping opponents. So, we're going to build our identity on defense.”
A Different Kind of Battle
Being a defensive stalwart is something Coach Louie’s daughter, Lenai Louie, has learned the last four years on Sprayberry’s basketball team. Lenai (pronounced luh-NAY), a Class of 2026 guard, thrived while her mom served as an assistant to Coach Avery. Lenai was the defensive stopper. She took on every challenge, guarding fast guards and big centers. She was so good at it that Montreat College offered her a scholarship.

The next challenge for Lenai, though, won't be on the basketball court. Soon after her high school graduation, she was diagnosed with a rare pediatric cancer of the liver. This became a new opponent for the basketball star and her family to defend. Coach Louie knows that the battles her team will face on the basketball court will be tough. However, facing an even tougher personal battle with her daughter makes athletic obstacles easier to stare down. Her daughter, specifically, encouraged her to jump full force into her new head coaching role.
“Lenai has been a driving force behind Coach Louie's advancement at Sprayberry,” Dr. Church said. “Lenai was the one who encouraged Coach to earn her advanced degree and put herself in a position to earn the Head Coach spot. The Louie family has strong community support, and there are a lot of people in her corner who will support them through this.”
Coach Louie feels there is purpose behind the pain.
“This has always been our journey,” Coach Louie explained. “Introducing my only daughter to basketball has been one of the greatest joys of my life. What she’s facing now motivates me every single day. I’ll coach the way she plays, with determination, toughness, and grit. The girls on our team love Lenai, and they’ll carry her competitive spirit with them every time they step on the floor.”
The Sprayberry community, encouraged by the basketball booster club, has stepped up in special ways to support Coach Louie, her family, and her daughter. While Lenai continues treatment in the hospital, both the coach and her daughter take comfort knowing their Sprayberry “village” is by their side.
“I told someone the other day that it's amazing what a village can do,” Coach Louie recalled. “Our family is so thankful for every prayer, every message, and every act of kindness. The moment people learned what we were facing, they surrounded us with love. That’s what family looks like, and we’ll never forget it.”
With challenges on the court and off, Coach Louie knows every season brings its share of battles. But bolstered by the support of her fiancé, her sons, and her “village,” she enters this new chapter with confidence and gratitude. Inspired daily by the strength she sees in Lenai, she is ready to lead Sprayberry through whatever battle comes next.
