National Principal's Month: Tritt's Karen Carstens

October 12, 2026 — Tritt Elementary School is known for its welcoming environment, where students learn, grow, and prepare for their next chapter. But behind the school's success is Principal Karen Carstens, whose experiences around the world have helped shape her approach to education.

Principal Carstens has led Tritt since 2018. Before that, she served as an assistant principal at Sope Creek and Powers Ferry elementary schools. After moving from Orlando to Cobb in 2005, she began her Cobb teaching career at Shallowford Falls, which kicked off her journey to becoming to the principal of one of the state's top elementary schools.

Her passion for adventure didn't stop at her time working in Japan. The Tritt principal also has a background in acrobatics, when she performed in the Florida State Flying High Circus, which included the flying trapeze, skypole, hand balancing, and the bicycle built for five.

While this story seems like a typical career path for an educator, Principal Carstens' journey to Tritt was anything but ordinary.

After graduating from college, Carstens moved to Japan to teach English, where she first saw the impact of education.

"Over the years, my experiences as both a parent and an educator have shaped my belief in the power of public education. I've seen firsthand how early intervention, incredible teachers, and a genuine belief in a child's potential can change the trajectory of a life," said Carstens.

Her adventures also include climbing Mount Fuji twice, riding an elephant in Nepal, and even skiing above the Arctic Circle in Finland!

Carstens is proud of the opportunities available to students at Tritt, a school recognized for its STEM, STEAM, and Arts Integration.

Along with the impressive learning environment Carstens has helped create, she's also proud of the overall community and family-feel that exists every day at school.

"There is something incredibly special about a community that loves its school as much as Tritt families do. Our teachers are extraordinary, our families are invested, and our students bring an energy and joy that make every day different. There's a genuine sense of joy in being a Tritt Tiger, and I think you feel that the moment you walk through our doors," Carstens said.
