June 2, 2026 — For more than a decade, students, staff, and visitors across Cobb Schools may have spotted a friendly four-legged officer making her way through school hallways. While many knew her as the lovable dog eager for pets and attention, K-9 Sadie was also one of the district's most valuable safety partners.

The Cobb County School District Police Department recently celebrated K-9 Sadie's retirement after 11 years of dedicated service, honoring her career with a special ceremony attended by officers, K-9 handlers, and team members who worked alongside her throughout the years.

A Trusted Partner in School Safety

Since partnering with Officer Marshall Duling in January 2015, Sadie has played an important role in helping maintain safe learning environments across the district. As a trained narcotics detection dog, she assisted school police by conducting searches and helping identify the presence of illegal substances, supporting the district's ongoing efforts to keep schools safe and drug-free. Her work was part of the Cobb County School District Police Department's proactive approach to safety—one that focuses not only on responding to concerns but also on preventing potential issues before they affect students and staff.

While Sadie's responsibilities were important, her enthusiasm for the job never faded.

"For her, working is play," Duling said. "When she walks into a building, she immediately goes into search mode. When she finds what she's looking for, she gets her special toy. It's the hunt that she likes."

More Than a Working Dog

Known for her affectionate nature, she loved receiving attention and quickly became a favorite visitor at schools throughout the district. One of Officer Duling's favorite memories happened shortly after they became partners. While visiting a school and chatting with front office staff, Sadie greeted everyone before suddenly leaping into his lap.

"The office staff thought it was hilarious," Duling recalled. "She's a very loving dog and very personal."

Her friendly demeanor helped make positive connections between students, staff, and school police officers. For many students, an interaction with Sadie was a memorable moment that brought smiles and helped create a welcoming atmosphere. Over the years, the bond between handler and K-9 grew far beyond a professional partnership.

"I get to bring my dog to work with me every day," Duling said. "She rides around with me, works with me, and goes home with me. We're like a family."

Together, the pair visited schools across the district, supporting safety efforts while becoming familiar faces in the Cobb community. As Sadie retires, she won't be going far. After years of serving the district, she will spend her retirement at home with Officer Duling and his family, enjoying a well-earned break from daily searches and school visits.

Safety Is a Community Commitment

Sadie's retirement is also an opportunity to recognize the many people, programs, and resources that work together to support safe schools. School safety extends beyond any one officer, program, or K-9 team. It is a shared commitment involving school police officers, educators, staff members, students, parents, and community partners who all play a role in creating secure learning environments. The district's safety strategy includes prevention, preparedness, communication, and response measures designed to help students feel safe, supported, and ready to learn each day.

K-9 teams like Sadie are one component of the district's broader safety efforts, which are highlighted through Cobb Shield, the district's comprehensive school safety initiative. Cobb Shield focuses on creating layers of protection that support both physical security and student well-being. The initiative includes safety technologies, emergency preparedness planning, mental health resources, anonymous reporting tools, partnerships with law enforcement, and ongoing training for staff and students.
