Cobb Schools Adult Education graduates celebrate their achievements during the 2026 commencement ceremony. Their success is a reminder that learning and new opportunities can begin at any stage of life.

June 17, 2026 — Weeks after more than 8,700 seniors graduated from Cobb Schools, nearly 50 adults graduated through Cobb's Adult Education program.

Through adult education, students can earn their GED, an English as a Second Language (ESL) certification, and take civics and citizenship classes.

As each graduate walked across the stage, each had a unique story that led to this proud moment.

While they all have different stories, the common bond is that they never quit working toward their goal of bettering themselves through education.

James Carter

At 47, James Carter decided it was time to finish what he started.

Originally from Virginia, he dropped out of high school during his senior year. While he started a family, had a steady job, and was able to provide for his kids, he realized he was capable of doing more with a diploma.

After being passed over for a new job opportunity because he had not finished high school, he decided to take action and return to school through Cobb's Adult Education program.

"The only way to get over the roadblocks was to get my GED. I came to work every day, and even on the days I was tired because it was important," said James.

What motivated James was to be a positive role model for his kids and show them that they can achieve something if they put their minds to it, as he did.

Now with his GED in hand, this proud graduate is ready to tackle this new chapter he helped pave for himself.

"I'm trying not to cry, but it's an honor to walk across that stage," said James.

Mariela Valdes

At 27, Mariela Valdes was tasked with starting over in a new country with a language barrier.

She came to Cobb County from Mexico City in 2025 and immediately worked on improving her English.

Through Cobb's Adult Education program, Mariela was able to earn her ESL certification, which she hopes will open up more doors and opportunities for her.

Right now, she's working as an au pair through a cultural exchange program and hopes to one day become certified as an ESL teacher so she can help others who were once in her situation.

"I would recommend it because they have an amazing program where the teachers are amazing and give space for each student to improve."
