Specialized Programs

Individualized instruction, services, and supports based on student need.

Cobb County School District provides specialized programs for students with disabilities who require specially designed instruction and supports beyond those available within the general education setting. Specialized program services and placement are determined by the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) team based on the student’s individual strengths, needs, goals, and required supports.

Bridge — Supports students who benefit from a structured and predictable learning environment. Students may require communication supports, additional sensory supports, consistent routines and schedules, support with transitions and changes in routine, and individualized strategies to access instruction and participate successfully throughout the school day.

Integrated — Provides individualized instruction for students who require support across multiple areas of the school day. The program emphasizes communication, social interaction, sensory and self-regulation needs, adaptive skills, and increased independence. Instruction and supports are individualized based on each student’s learning and developmental needs.

CORE — Provides a structured and supportive educational setting for students who require behavioral, social-emotional, and self-regulation supports to successfully access instruction. The program emphasizes academic instruction while explicitly teaching coping, regulation, social-emotional, and behavioral skills needed for success across school environments.

Foundational Skills — Provides specialized academic instruction for students who require modified instruction at an individualized pace and level. The program emphasizes academics while also developing communication, independence, adaptive behavior, life skills, and work-readiness skills.

Functional Skills — Provides specialized academic instruction for students who require modified instruction at an individualized pace and level. The instruction emphasizes functional academics, communication, self-care, independence, community participation, and life skills.

Daily Living Skills — Provides specialized academic instruction for students who require modified instruction at an individualized pace and level. The instruction emphasizes functional communication, including AAC when appropriate, self-care, functional academics, mobility, personal independence, and meaningful participation in school and community environments.

Transition — Provides specialized instruction and community-based experiences for students who access instruction through alternate achievement standards, have completed high school credit and testing requirements, and need support preparing for adult life. Instruction emphasizes daily living, employability and pre-employment skills, self-advocacy, community access, and post-secondary readiness. Students have opportunities to generalize functional skills across school, community, and work-based settings in preparation for meaningful adult outcomes.

Individualized Placement

Specialized program placement is individualized. While programs are designed to address common areas of student need, a student’s disability eligibility or diagnosis does not automatically determine program placement. The IEP team considers the individual student’s strengths, needs, goals, required supports, and least restrictive environment when determining services and placement.

Special Education Services

Adapted Physical Education — Adapted Physical Education (APE) provides specially designed physical education instruction for students with disabilities who require individualized support to access and participate in physical education. Services are based on individual student needs and, when required, are documented through the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP). Adapted Physical Education supports the development of physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills, and skills needed for participation in physical education activities.
