CVA Recognizes Outstanding Educator with the Wayne Pope Award

November 3, 2025 — Teachers carry many things: laptops, ID badges, and a seemingly endless list of acronyms. But the most meaningful things they carry can’t be held in their hands. They embody creativity, persistence, empathy, and the ability to connect with students regardless of the distance.
Dr. Wayne Pope embodied those qualities — and more. A founding teacher at Cobb Virtual Academy (CVA), Dr. Pope taught well into his eighties, not out of obligation, but out of passion. He believed deeply in the power of online learning to reach every student, and he never let changing technology or challenges stand in the way of that mission.
To honor his extraordinary legacy, CVA established the Wayne Pope Award for Excellence in Online Teaching, recognizing one teacher each year who demonstrates the same heart, perseverance, and dedication that defined Dr. Pope’s career.
This year’s recipient, Ms. Amanda Childress, exemplifies everything the award represents. Her virtual classroom thrives on connection. She knows her students’ goals, their challenges, and their potential.
When students struggle, she doesn’t give up; she reaches out, collaborates with families, and helps them find their way forward. Ms. Childress brings creativity, compassion, and consistency to everything she does. She supports her colleagues, improves the program for everyone, and continues to inspire through her leadership and care.
On behalf of the entire CVA community, we are proud to honor Ms. Amanda Childress with the 2026 Wayne Pope Award for Excellence in Online Teaching—a fitting tribute to a teacher who truly embodies the spirit of Dr. Wayne Pope.
