Georgia Tech Girls Basketball Surprises Argyle Students for Reading Success

Argyle Elementary students are reading champions

Argyle Elementary School students love to read, and it shows. In fact, Argyle students read more than 150,000 pages to win this year’s Buzzer Reader competition sponsored by Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology). The Cobb school has won the Georgia Tech reading contest for three years in a row! In celebration of Argyle’s achievement, the Georgia Tech Women's varsity basketball team recently surprised Argyle students who won the competition. The Georgia Tech players joined the Argyle students via Zoom.

Argyle students won eight of the 14 awards in the competition and had the highest scores for a 3rd-grade, 4th-grade, and 5th-grade reader and the highest 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade classrooms. Argyle also had the highest Reader in the whole competition and the overall highest pages read as a school! 

Georgia Tech recognized the students with plaques and other gifts. 

The winning students and classes from Argyle Elementary School include:

Individual Winners:

3rd Grade – Ahmet Ungor read 4,395 pages 

4th Grade – Tish Jackson read 20,553 pages 

5th Grade – Roshan Senthil Kumar read 19,510 pages 

Classroom Winners:

3rd Grade – Christy Barton, 11,327 pages 

4th Grade – Minerva Bridges, 37,383 pages 

5th Grade – Ryan Garcia, 37,811 pages 

Overall Individual Winners:

Elementary - Tish Jackson, 4th grader, read 20,553 pages (Teacher, Minerva Bridges)

Although the school year is coming to an end, learning doesn’t have to come to an end. Students can grab a book to keep reading and try to outpace the Argyle reading champions. Families can also sign up for Cobb’s Summer Link to get 30 days of daily activities.  Learn more about Cobb’s other summer programs here. 

The Cobb County School District's Library Media Education Department, in conjunction with the Cobb County Public Library, Smyrna Public Library, and Marietta City Schools, challenges all students to read 20 minutes every day and set a goal to read for 15 hours this summer!

Join Cobb’s reading challenge and help your school show its love of reading. So far, Cobb students have logged more than 6.2 million minutes of reading time since August 2020!
