Cobb Students Continue to Outperform Georgia Peers on State Report Card

Cobb students are more academically proficient than their Georgia peers at all levels. In fact, Cobb middle school and high school students topped their Georgia peers by double digits according to the results from the College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) for 2023. 

The Georgia Department of Education uses the CCRPI to rate schools and school systems, like a report card.

“Similar to past years, CCRPI shows why Cobb is one of the best places in the country to raise children. Thanks to the Superintendent and his team’s uncompromising focus, our students are more academically proficient and prepared than their peers across the metro. Although no number or formula can capture what students know, Cobb’s taxpayers have yet another way to be sure their children and grandchildren are ready for life after graduation,” said Board Chair Brad Wheeler.

Cobb students demonstrated a higher content mastery than their peers, returning scores 8.5 points higher at the elementary school level, 11.2 points at the middle school level, and 14.3 points at the high school level. 

Measuring growth by all students from year to year on Georgia Milestones, Cobb students showed a Progress 3.5 points higher for middle school and 10.6 points higher for high school. Cobb Elementary students also led their Georgia peers. 

Cobb students topped state and metro peers in all subjects and all levels on the Georgia Milestones, and the 2023 CCRPI reflects those prior results, showing Cobb students leading by more than 3 points at all levels for the readiness component.

At the middle school level, Cobb students returned a Closing the Gap score 25.5 points higher than their state peers. Closing the Gap measures the increase in Milestones scores from the prior year for subgroups of students.

For the Beyond the Core component of the state report card, Cobb elementary and middle students returned a near-perfect score of 99.7 and 99.1 respectively. This component reflects the success of Cobb students in fine arts, world language, CTAE, and PE classes. 

Graduation is the pinnacle of student success and serves as the focal point for the District’s strategic plan, which reflects the competencies parents and community members expect students to have upon graduation. The latest CCRPI results list Cobb’s 5-year graduation rate as 89.7%. The 5-year cohort graduation rates are one of the indicators in CCRPI for high school and are calculated using the same method as the 4-year rate except students are allowed one more year to graduate. 

All Cobb high schools saw an increase in the 5-year rate compared to the prior 4-year rate. Thirteen of 17 Cobb high schools had 5-year graduation rates over 90%.

“I am proud to see Georgia students making academic progress and succeeding in and out of core subject areas,” State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. “There are clear areas of strength and areas for improvement as well – as a state, we will continue to invest in academic recovery to address targeted needs and ensure every student receives an excellent education.”

Notes on Comparability: Some CCRPI components were not calculated in 2022 due to pandemic-related data limitations, and Readiness component scores are not comparable from 2022 to 2023. See additional details at the bottom of the release.

The CCRPI no longer includes an overall 0-100 score for schools, districts, or the state. This change was first implemented in 2022 under an addendum from the U.S. Department of Education and made permanent this year under an amendment to Georgia’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan. Each CCRPI component – Content Mastery, Progress, Closing Gaps, Readiness, and Graduation Rate for high schools – still has a 0-100 score. The change was made to increase transparency and provide a more complete picture of school performance, ensuring that challenges and opportunities are not hidden behind a single score.
